Just in: Roman Abramovich finally freed of over £5m fine after latest UEFA decision
According to recent reports, Chelsea were fined by UEFA following the club’s involvement in the breakaway European Super League last month.
Six English clubs – Chelsea, Manchester United, Manchester City, Liverpool, Arsenal and Tottenham were all part of the proposed breakaway league before backing out due to fan backlash.
Chelsea were hit with a fine of £3.7m, as well as the other English clubs at the time.
However, UEFA has now revealed that it has dropped all disciplinary charges against all the clubs that were involved in the European Super League fiasco, including the trio of Real Madrid, Barcelona and Juventus who refused to back out.
On Monday evening, UEFA announced that its independent case against the trio has been “declared null and void, without any prejudice, as if the proceedings had never been opened.”
This came after a court in Madrid ruled that UEFA should not punish the three remaining clubs.
Also, UEFA has decided to drop an initial punishment which was said to be a combined fine of €15m and to have 5% of their revenues from UEFA competitions withheld for one season.
UEFA has released a statement, thus: “UEFA will continue to take all necessary steps, in strict accordance with national and EU law, in order to defend the interests of UEFA and of all football stakeholders.”
