‘Leaving Chelsea, It’s like leaving your family’ – player admits after 14 years at the club
Drew Spence, a midfielder for the Chelsea women’s team, has announced that she will leave the club at the end of the season after 14 years with the club.
Spence’s final Chelsea appearances could come against Manchester United in the league and Manchester City in the FA Cup final.
Over the previous decade, the 29-year-old, who joined Chelsea in 2008, has been a significant player for Emma Hayes’ team.
“This is definitely one of the most difficult decisions I’ve ever had to make,” the midfielder told Chelsea’s official website.
“It’s like saying goodbye to your family.”
She is Chelsea’s longest-serving player, having debuted in the senior team in 2009.
Emma Hayes, the women’s team manager, has praised the departing player as a Chelsea icon.
“I’ve seen Drew develop from a young player to a seasoned pro,” she remarked.
“I’m looking forward to seeing where she goes next.” She is totally deserving of everything she has accomplished, and for what she has done at this football club, she will join a select group of legends.
“Drew has embodied everything we’ve stood for during my tenure.
“She’s seen the club evolve from an amateur to one of Europe’s best teams, and she’s played a key role in that development.”
