Liverpool and Chelsea set to lock horns in race to sign midfield duo

According to The Athletic, Liverpool and Chelsea are interested in signing Grimsby Town teenagers Louis Boyd and Ben Grist.

The Athletic claim the two teenagers – who are preparing to undertake their GCSEs this year – could leave the club due to Grimsby needing to raise funds.

Boyd was handed his professional debut in September in Grimsby’s EFL Trophy penalty shootout win over Harrogate Town.

The midfielder became both the club’s youngest-ever debutant and goalscorer in the match aged 15 years and 324 days.

Fellow midfielder Grist was an unused substitute in that match and is yet to appear for the first team.

But Boyd was rewarded with a first league appearance a few days later in Grimsby’s 1-0 loss at Walsall.

Financial trouble for League Two side Grimsby means they may have to sell Boyd and Grist, either in January or next summer.

The window for Premier League clubs to buy players from the EFL remains open until October 16 though any move for the Grimsby duo is likely to be in January or next year.
