The Premier League will hold another coronavirus crisis meeting today, with all 20 clubs set to decide the fate of the league this season.
There are just nine game weeks left until the end of the 2019/20 season, but the league has since been placed on suspension until April 4, after Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta and Chelsea youngster Callum Hudson-Odoi tested positive to coronavirus.
The Premier League will today host an emergency coronavirus conference call on Thursday involving all 20 clubs to discuss how they can complete the current campaign. This meeting comes two days after the UEFA meeting, which decided to push this summer’s Euro championship to next year and the dates of the Europa League and Champions League finals were also shifted.
The Premier League’s decision on working out what to do next is a very delicate one as the virus is still on rampage and major events have been shut down. A key part of the meeting will be to discuss long-term strategy.
There have been suggestions that the season could be voided, but that would create huge issues over final league standings including relegation, promotion and European qualification – though there is thought to be little resistance to Liverpool being crowned champions.
The league body could also decide to play games beyond close doors to finalise the season as the Premier League could face a massive hit from broadcasting contracts, upwards of £750million, if they fail to complete the season, with 92 matches still to be played.
