REVEALED: Why Chelsea switched from Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang deal to sign Werner

According to The Athletic, Chelsea strongly considered signing Aubameyang and discussed a move for the Gabonese in the January transfer window.

Meanwhile, Chelsea have reportedly agreed terms with RB Leipzig striker Timo Werner ahead of a summer move to Chelsea but it could have been Arsenal striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang wearing the Chelsea shirt instead.

Chelsea’s technical and performance advisor Petr Cech, who played alongside Aubameyang at Arsenal, and Chelsea boss Frank Lampard were very keen on signing the 30-year-old but their request to sign the striker was turned down by Chelsea transfer chief Marina Granovskaia.

Granovskaia preferred signing a younger striker that will deliver the goods at Stamford Bridge over a long period of time and Aubameyang didn’t fit that profile as he was already 30.

The Blues instead pursued a deal for 24 year old RB Leipzig striker Timo Werner, who is reportedly close to joining Chelsea.
