REVEALED: Why Marcos Alonso could play for Atletico and not Chelsea in the UCL

The Blues have a massive Champions League second round tie ahead.

However, Chelsea have been drawn to face Spanish giants Atletico Madrid in the next round of the competition.

Meanwhile, Chelsea left-back Marcos Alonso may be an Atletico player by that time, if reports are anything to go by.

Alonso is currently third choice left-back at Chelsea, and the Blues will be keen to offload the 29-year-old in the January transfer market.

Antonio Conte’s Inter Milan is one of the sides to have been linked with Alonso, but according to reporter Pipi Estrada, who claimed on Spanish TV show El Chiringuito that Chelsea aren’t interested in talking to Inter. He claims that Alonso is already on his way to Atletico to play for Diego Simeone.

In other news, Atletico Madrid right-back Kieran Trippier will also miss the game, after he was given a ten-week suspension by the Football Association as he was found guilty of breaching the governing body’s rules on betting.

An FA spokesperson said: “The Atletico Madrid defender denied seven alleged breaches of FA Rule E8(1)(b), which were said to occur during July 2019, and requested a personal hearing.

“An independent Regulatory Commission was appointed to hear the case, with four of the alleged breaches found proven and three dismissed during a subsequent personal hearing.

“The independent Regulatory Commission’s written reasons for its decisions and the associated sanction will be published in due course.”
