Sterling reacts to new role under Potter as £72m star makes Chelsea transfer decision

Chelsea’s summer acquisition Raheem Sterling participated for the Blues during their second UCL match against RB Salzburg.

Sterling was used as a false nine by former manager Thomas Tuchel, but in his first game in charge of the Blues on Wednesday night, new boss Graham Potter opted to use Sterling as a left back flank.

As a result, Sterling scored the only goal for Chelsea before the visitors drew even and ultimately shared the victory with the EPL teams.

Speaking on the new role under Potter, Sterling said he enjoyed it and believes over time he would get better.

He said, ‘I played in a slightly different role under the new manager, and it is one I enjoyed playing, out wide. Over time, I will get better,’ Sterling said post-match.

‘I am happy to play along the front line but he wanted me out wide, getting at the full-back, getting in the box and creating chances. The more time under him [Potter] I think the better it will be for us,’ he added.

Chelsea stopper Kepa Arrizabalaga has revealed that he rejected the chance to depart from the club over the summer.

The 27-year-old Spaniard has fallen down the pecking order at Stamford Bridge and is regarded as the club’s number two behind Edouard Mendy.

Arrizabalaga, who has three years remaining on his contract, has also spoken about his desire to return to the Spain national team squad for the World Cup in Qatar later this year.

“Obviously I dream about it,” the 11-cap international added, “I had the privilege of being in Russia and I work to be there.

“This time that I haven’t played at the club is difficult, but I feel the confidence of the national team’s coaching staff and hopefully if I have continuity at my club I can be there.”
