Striker Mertens opens up and officially tells Chelsea where he wants to be next season

Chelsea have been dealt a blow in their summer transfer plans with Dries Mertens targeting a stay in Serie A should his Napoli contract expire.

We were able to delve into their transfer kitty this transfer window after getting their transfer ban overturned just a few months ago, but despite all the talk, and despite all the speculation surrounding possible new signings, Frank Lampard has been unable to complete the transfer deals that he would have liked and will now have to wait until the summer to get his transfer deals done.

And that has led to speculation in the media suggesting that a new striker will be a priority ,as he needs to add a top-class forward to help Tammy Abraham out with the goals, with Mertens constantly linked with a free move to Stamford Bridge.

Reports have even suggested that Lampard has been in constant contact with the striker about a summer move, however, According to Sky Sports Italia, the 33-year-old would prioritise a move to the San Siro over a shot at the Premier League.

“Yes there is a buy-out clause. But I’m happy at Napoli and I want to stay. I really like Italy. I am good there and they treat me good,” Mertens told reporters.

“Yes there was interest [from Chelsea], and from other clubs also, but in my head there was never an intention to change clubs. This season was really good. I am gong to try and be even better next year.”

Look, a move to Chelsea at this stage in his career probably doesn’t make sense as he would not be able to adjust to the quality of the Premier League, so staying put may be the best option?
