The Kai Havertz midfield conundrum that Frank Lampard has to solve

THE KAI HAVERTZ TACTICAL ISSUE FOR LAMPARD

Last season Lampard majorly used a 4-4-3 formation. Only in a few games, he made an exception. This season he has used the 4-2-3-1 formation. The latter involves the use of an attacking midfielder. If Lampard uses Havetz behind the striker then he will go for 4-2-3-1.

Last season for Leverkusen he got many goals from that position. However, the likes of Hudson Odoi and Mount will also ask for opportunities. Both of them are capable of playing in a similar position. But Chelsea spent around $80 million on him.

Thus Lampard will play him in order to justify his signing. While in a 4-3-3 formation he will constantly drop deep. Thus Chelsea will need two ball wining midfielders. Havertz is unlikely to provide the protection to defense needed in a 4-3-3.

If Chelsea signs Declan Rice, then they can have two ball wining midfielders. While Rice can also provide the necessary protection to the defense. But Kovacic is likely to suffer because if Rice arrives. The Croatian has only played 132 minutes this season.

HOW HAS KAI DONE SO FAR?

The German has scored four goals and further provided three assists. However, his other abilities have caught the eye. He is technically very good and he operates very well in tight spaces. Havertz also puts a real shift helping the defenders as well.

He is only 21 years old and with time he will improve. The Premier League is more competitive than the Bundesliga. Thus he has done well but more is needed for him. The way he plays it is clear that he can offer more. It is likely that he will with time.

There are some aspects of his game that need improvement. Most of the time he likely to play it safe. At times he loses concentration and gives the ball away in dangerous situations.

Chelsea fans would want to see him more in the final third situation. He can’t play safe all the time, sometimes he needs to take risks.
