Why Chelsea could face a 9-points deduction following Roman Abramovich’s sanction

Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich has been sanctioned by the UK government, for having links with Russia president Vladimir Putin.

However, Roman Abramovich’s assets have been frozen and a travel ban placed on the Russian billionaire.

Currently, Abramovich can no longer sell Chelsea, and the club’s economic activities have as well been suspended.

With Chelsea operating on a special sporting licence, the club’s finances has been doomed to crash in the long run.

Firstly, tickets to matches can no longer be sold past this point, and only season ticket holders will be able to attend games for the foreseeable future. Away fans will also not be able to attend games at Stamford Bridge while the license is currently being utilised.

As for the club’s merchandising, every sale has also been cut off, with the Chelsea shop closed until the foreseeable future.

Regarding transfers and negotiation of contracts, every negotiation will be suspended for now.

Amazingly, Chelsea could also be hit with a 9-point deduction if the club goes into administration as a result of a lack of income, which will give the likes of Manchester United an opportunity to topple Chelsea in the league’s standing.

With the club set to lose their £40million-a-year sponsorship deal with Three, as well as other sponsorship deals, how then can the club function properly and meet its financial obligations?

Surely, the UK government has fired a shot at Chelsea FC and not Roman Abramovich.
