Why Chelsea might not finish the season – Petr Cech reveals after Chelsea 1-0 win over Newcastle

The Blues cannot sell or sign players, renew contracts, sell new tickets or merchandise, and have significantly reduced travel budgets and home match costs due to the sanctions on Abramovich.

However, Chelsea technical director Petr Cech has revealed that Chelsea are living ‘day by day’ since the UK Government sanctioned Roman Abramovich and admitted he does not know whether the Blues can finish the season.

Speaking ahead of Chelsea’s home tie against Newcastle on Sunday, Cech opened by offering his sympathies to the people of Ukraine.

Cech told Sky Sports: “Before I answer a question I would like to say it’s been devastating to watch what’s been happening in Ukraine, and of course our thoughts are with the victims of that situation.”

“I hope the situation improves soon and people will stop suffering.”

Asked directly about whether Chelsea can finish the season, Cech replied: “We have to admit that we go day by day, because it’s not in our hands. The conversations are going on (so) that we can operate in a way that we can finish the season.

“Obviously it’s a difficult situation and we’re part of the Premier League as well, one of the best competitions in the world and I believe that for us to carry on to finish the season, it would obviously help everybody involved in the Premier League too.

“We have a lot of questions but not many answers. But we are determined to concentrate on things we can control, which is working with people, supporting each other, come to training, focus on the games.

“It’s probably the only thing we can control at the moment and the team have the support around to do it.”
