“Chelsea should sign him before pre-season starts” – Gus Poyet tells Chelsea must sign £200,000k a-week interesting player
Before leaving for preseason in the United States, former Chelsea player Gustavo Poyet thinks the Blues should try to sign Juventus defender Matthijs de Ligt.
Following the departure of Antonio Rudiger, De Ligt, 22, is rumored to be considering a move to Stamford Bridge, with Andreas Christensen likely to follow.
When their contracts expired, both defenders became free agents; Rudiger joined Real Madrid while Christensen is anticipated to finalize a move to Barcelona.
According to reports, Chelsea is thinking about trading Timo Werner or Christian Pulisic for De Ligt with Juventus.
Given the dearth of defensive choices, Poyet thinks the Blues should surely try to entice De Ligt to Stamford Bridge and do so before preseason.
However, He spoke to Lord Ping with regard to the west London club’s summer transfer strategy:
“The most important position Chelsea should be strengthening is in central defence.”
Poyet continued: “De Ligt is an interesting player because when he left his previous club he went somewhere that he needed to improve tactically and dramatically to perform at that level.”
Poyet urged Thomas Tuchel’s side to sign the Dutch defender if they have the finances to do so, concluding:
“If he wants to move and Chelsea can afford him then he could be an interesting player for them. If Chelsea start pre-season without that top level centre-back, I’ll be worried.”
