‘It’s raining, we have an intensive match’ – Tuchel reveals why he was disappointed with Martin Atkinson after his yellow card

Following Chelsea 3-1 victory over Southampton, Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel was absolutely disappointed with the officiating after VAR disallowed Timo Werner’s first goal before half-time

However, Timo Werner looked to have doubled Chelsea’s lead just before half-time, only for VAR to rule out the strike as Cesar Azpilicueta was adjudged to have fouled Kyle Walker-Peters in the build-up.

Tuchel said: “We have talks here before the season. Everybody tells me in English football we will not whistle soft touches. And now we’re here in the middle of London, it’s raining, we have an intensive match and then it’s not even directly after the situation that there is a goal.

“There’s a chance, there’s a second chance and then there’s a third cross which leads to the goal.

“So, if we go back, this [situation] is not a decisive action for this goal. I have absolutely zero understanding why we go back to this situation and take the goal away.”
