REVEALED: Why UK government set to sanctions Roman Abramovich and freeze his prized asset, Chelsea

According to The Telegraph, UK government has come under pressure from MPs to impose sanctions on Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich and Alisher Usmanov after detained Kremlin critic Alexei Navalny called for action against them.

The 54-year-old billionaire was called out by Russian opposition activist Alexey Navalny as one of the key beneficiaries of Vladimir Putin’s allegedly kleptocratic regime.

Abramovich has not been to Stamford Bridge since 2018 when his UK visa expired, and has since obtained Israeli citizenship. He has since been rejected Tier 1 investor visa, and has not been to Stamford Bridge ever since.

Roman Abramovich could be targeted for further sanctions, a UK Foreign Office minister has revealed.

There have been calls in the UK Parliament to freeze Abramovich’s assets in the UK, with Chelsea believed to be among his asset.

According to the report, a spokesperson for Abramovich has claimed that there is no basis for such allegations.
