BREAKING: Premier League disqualified Roman Abramovich as Chelsea director after latest Government decision

According to latest reports reaching us this afternoon, Roman Abramovich has been disqualified by the Premier League from being a director of Chelsea Football Club, it has been officially confirmed.

The Premier League announced the development in a statement released on Saturday afternoon as a result of sanctions being imposed on the 55-year-old by the UK Government on Thursday.

Premier League release statement: “Following the imposition of sanctions by the UK Government, the Premier League board has disqualified Roman Abramovich as a Director of Chelsea Football Club.

“The Board’s decision does not impact on the club’s ability to train and play its fixtures, as set out under the terms of a licence by the Government which expires on 31 May 2022.”

Roman Abramovich had his assets frozen by the UK Government on Thursday, causing the sale of Chelsea to be stopped. However, following discussions between all parties, the sale has now been given the green light to resume.

But the 55-year-old is now no longer in control after the league’s latest decision to remove him as a Director.

The understanding from the Premier League now is that this decision gives the process for Chelsea to be sold the go ahead.

Chelsea have been given a special licence to continue fulfilling their fixtures until the end of the season, at least, with amendments to the licence expected to be made over the coming days.

Abramovich’s disqualification has no impact on the sale of Chelsea and it’s likely he won’t receive near his £3 billion asking price for the Club amid interest from the United States, England and other parties.

Parties have until March 18 to submit offers to Raine, the US bank who are representing and overseeing the sale of Chelsea.
